Installed in 1870 , the fountain in the Plaza del Adelantado in San Cristóbal de La Laguna was purchased by Tomás de Nava-Grimón y Pérez de Barradas, VII Marquis of Villanueva del Prado and replaced an earlier fountain of local stonework.
The marble fountain was ordered from Marseille in 1868 and arrived on the island via the Ghirnalda Hermanos shipping company, although it may have come from Italy. Together with the fountain in the Plaza de Weyler in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, installed in 1899, it is one of the most important large marble fountains in the cultural heritage of the island of Tenerife.
The weight is estimated at 30 tons . It is made of superimposed cups supporting slender columns and there is no shortage of masks with decorative motifs.
The fountain was installed in the Plaza del Adelantado, protected by a latticework that also comes from Marseille and that gives a decorative meaning to this area, where the most important buildings of La Laguna are located: the Courts of Justice , Recova (now demolished), the Chapel of San Miguel, the Monastery of Santa Catalina, the Town Hall, the Telefonica building, the Palacio de Nava, the House of Anchieta and Hotel Nivaria.
