Surrounded by forests and dominated by imposing walls of pink sandstone, Graufthal owes its fame to curious troglodytic dwellings which shelter at the foot of the cliffs, houses unique in Alsace
The rock serves as floor, wall and ceiling, only the front facades, in blue color, were built by man.
These picturesque houses have a particular charm that walkers can discover during a visit. A real leap in time; the living conditions in these houses inhabited until 1958, amaze more than one visitor.
Don't miss the remains of the old Saint-Gangolphe Abbey and the exhibition "An abbey resurfaces from the past" at the Maisons des Rochers.
