HiptriptipA route in the spotlight |
|
The route we like to bring in the spotlight is the mountainbike route 'Regiotour Vlaamse Ardennen' or Regional Tour of the Flemish Ardennes. This is the first official mountainbike tour on RouteYou, but definitely not the last. This route was made in collaboration with the sportdepartments of each municipality of the region. We also added some video coverage of previous tours, so you can get a good idea why you shouldn't miss this event! If you hurry, you can still make it for this event: June 9, 2007. |

Pytheas's choiseGlobespot of the month |
Set-upEvery month, we ask somebody to be a modern Pytheas and tell us something about the most amazing place they have experienced, and explain why this is! Globespot of the month: Gosausee, Austria & the scene of the "THE SOUND OF MUSIC"Pytheas of the month is Els Diependaele. She lives in the beautiful Belgian village Velzeke and teaches the young children of the region. She also takes care of here three lovely daughters and her husband. And of this last activity, you all can enjoy indirectly because here husband is the founder of RouteYou. Here you can check out the tour in the region she describes. And here's her story of her globespot of the month: The most beautiful spot of the world, therefore my Pytheas spot, is "Gosausee" in Austria! This is a clear example of a 'goosebumps'-landscape.
The Vorderer Gosausee, a mountain lake at an altitude of 937m above sealevel, is surrounded by steep cliffs. Breathtaking is the view on the Gosau glacier and the Dachstein mountains. This panormama is infamous for Austria. It has ben painted several times. Source pictures: Els Diependaele Last summer, we cycled the 10-lake tour in the area of Salzkammergut in Austria. The 5th day, we cycled from Salzburg to Golling. This route is a part of the "Tauernradweg". The path along the Saalzach brings you along the romantic Schloss Leopoldskron (where the "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" was shot), Schloss Hellbrunn, the 19th century castle of Anif and the city of Hallein, with its museum of Celts. This was also the place where Franz Grüber and father Mohr wrote their Chritmas carol "Stille Nacht". From Golling, a taxi drove us 30 km further to a desolate hostel: Gasthof Gosausee. It's located at the end of the Gosau valley, next to the Vorderer Gosausee. The Vorderer Gosausee, a mountain lake at an altitude of 937m above sealevel, is surrounded by steep cliffs. Breathtaking is the view on the Gosau glacier and the Dachstein mountains. This panormama is infamous for Austria. It has been painted several times. This is an unique experience. The very basic hotel fits perfectly in the environment. We are obviously not the only visitors who are excited about this place. I can really recommend the walk around the lake. It's also frequently used by joggers. Some of them jump in the water afterwards for a fresh dip in the lake. A glass of "Grünen Veltliner" and a delicious meal is a great way to end your day here. In the morning, the view gets even better. The haze at dawn above the lake makes it all very mysterious. When we talk about our holidays in Austria, we always mention this place... Who is/was Pytheas?Pytheas, the Greek was one of the great travellers during Greek-Roman times. He travelled to all corners of the then known world. To find out more about the The Extraordinary Voyage of Pytheas the Greek go to The Extraordinary Voyage of Pytheas the Greek Let us know about your most amazing globe-spot you have ever experienced! Or alternatively, convince somebody else to be Pytheas of the month and ask them to create a route around the globespot! |

'Walk around' with a Segway in Florence?A few weeks ago, I could enjoy a 'route' on a Segway in Florence. What's a Segway? A description could be the following. Design a device that is impossible to keep your balance with, while driving around, if you pay attention to the normal earthly physical forces. Add a large amount of high-tech sensors such as gyroscopes, accelerators, speedometers,... to make sure you keep your balance and which makes it impossible to fall over. And this is the device which lets you manoeuvre comfortably around a city. Another definition would be a scooter with the wheels on the side. What's really amazing is that it is impossible to fall over. When you lean forward or backward, the device accellerates or slows down to maintain your balance. It looks difficult, but it's very easy. More and more, these great devices are used for tourist and event-tours. Here you can get the link of info about this treat in Florence. And here you can get more information about Segway inthe Netherlands and Belgium. |
