The entire historic center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. It is the total picture of colorful historic facades supplemented with a number of special buildings that have given the city center of La Laguna a place on this list. San Cristobal de la Laguna is sometimes affectionately called the 'open-air museum' by the locals.
This description of the walk aims to be a city guide with all the information for a visit to the city.
Start at the Adelantado car park , which is located on the edge of the historic center.
We soon arrive at the Monastery of Santa Clara de Asís, of which we can visit three patios and four cloisters via the Museum of Sacred Art that is located there.
Passing several city palaces and authentic houses we arrive at the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna, a former military training area bordered by the church and the monastery del Santísimo Cristo where the most venerated crucified Christ and the oldest sculpture in the Canary Islands can be admired. The peace that characterizes the square is broken once a year, in September, when the popular Fiestas del Cristo are celebrated there.
We walk on to the Parque de la Vega because we absolutely want to walk the Camino Largo, a seven hundred meter long avenue with beautiful Canarian palm trees . We pass the Castillo de La Lagune, a chic wedding venue where everyone is welcome for a drink on their beautiful terrace , or even inside if you want.
Through the charming Parque de La Constitución we return to Calle San Juan. We pass the Iglesia Nuestra Señora De Los Dolores which was once the city's first hospital.
A little further we come to the former monastery of San Agustín, one of the best and most important Renaissance monasteries in the Canary Islands. A little further on, the Iglesia de la Concepción, the first church in Tenerife, awaits us. You can climb the tower there.
This brings us to the Plaza de la Concepción , the oldest square in La Laguna and possibly Tenerife. Past some stately houses and the opulent facade of the Teatro Leal we arrive at the Catedral with its impressive interior, part of the UNESCO world heritage.
We continue walking to the Plaza del Adelantado and pass many famous old houses. It was one of the most important squares of the old city. The town hall, monastery, church and a chapel surround the square with its famous fountain in the middle.
A wonderful ending to this walk past all the sights!
Be sure to consult the information about the sights once you are there . They explain what you will see!
