Viena es la capital de Austria, a la vez que uno de sus nueve estados federados. Está situada en el este del estado, cerca de la frontera con Eslovaquia, a orillas del río Danubio. Está rodeada por el estado federado de Baja Austria. Con una población de 1.712.903 habitantes, Viena es la ciudad más grande, centro cultural y político de Austria. El área metropolitana tiene 2,4 millones de habitantes, población similar a la de la ciudad en 1914. La lengua oficial es el alemán.
Es sede de varias compañías e instituciones internacionales, entre otras la OSCE, la OPEP y diversas agencias de las Naciones Unidas, así como la Agencia Internacional de la Energía Atómica. Cada año, el 1 de enero se celebra el Concierto de Año Nuevo de Viena.
