Wenen is de hoofdstad van Oostenrijk, evenals een van zijn negen federale staten. Het ligt in het oosten van de staat, dicht bij de grens met Slowakije, aan de oevers van de Donau. Het is omgeven door de federale staat Neder-Oostenrijk. Met een bevolking van 1.712.903 inwoners is Wenen de grootste stad en het culturele en politieke centrum van Oostenrijk. Het metropolitane gebied heeft 2,4 miljoen inwoners, een bevolking vergelijkbaar met die van de stad in 1914. De officiële taal is Duits.
Het is de zetel van verschillende internationale bedrijven en instellingen, waaronder de OSCE, de OPEC en verschillende agentschappen van de Verenigde Naties, evenals de Internationale Organisatie voor Atoomenergie. Elk jaar op 1 januari vindt het Nieuwjaarsconcert van Wenen plaats.
