La avenida Leopold II se curva en un elegante arco alrededor de la escultura femenina más conocida de Ostende: La Mar. "Cuerpo desnudo" es otro nombre para esta dama, pero en el lenguaje coloquial siempre se le llama "Dikke Mathille". El escultor Georges Grard tenía una preferencia por el desnudo femenino en su obra. En La Mar, representó la exuberancia y sensualidad del mar en una figura femenina.
Hasta 1963, la obra de arte adornaba el Kursaal.
