Description

La excavación del canal de Schipdonk fue, junto con la excavación del canal de Leopoldo, una de las primeras grandes obras de infraestructura en el joven Bélgica. Desde algo aguas arriba de Deinze, el canal se separa del Leie para dirigirse hacia el norte, atravesando el centro de Nevele, hasta llegar al canal de Gante-Brugge. Este canal es mucho más antiguo que el canal de Schipdonk y, como no se quería que el agua sucia del canal de Schipdonk entrara en el canal de Gante-Brugge, se construyó una compuerta y un sifón para que el agua del canal de desvío pudiera pasar por debajo del otro. La 'Tienda de Schipdonck' cerca de este cruce daría nombre al canal.
