La Plaza de los Mártires fue durante la Primera Guerra Mundial el escenario de crímenes de guerra alemanes y destrucción del patrimonio cultural de Lovaina. Así, en agosto de 1940, se llevaron a cabo decenas de ejecuciones como represalia por la resistencia contra el ocupante alemán. En memoria de estos eventos se erigió el Monumento a la Paz.
Dos veces al año, aquí se presenta (una parte) de las atracciones de la feria de Lovaina. Además, en verano se organizan varios torneos deportivos al aire libre, como un torneo de voleibol de playa y un torneo de minifútbol.
