La place des Martyrs a été le théâtre des crimes de guerre allemands et des destructions du patrimoine culturel de Louvain pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Ainsi, en août 1940, des dizaines d'exécutions ont eu lieu en représailles à la résistance contre l'occupant allemand. En mémoire de ces événements, le Monument de la Paix a été érigé.
Deux fois par an, une (partie) des attractions de la foire de Louvain y est présentée. De plus, divers tournois sportifs en plein air sont organisés en été, comme un tournoi de beach-volley et un tournoi de mini-football.
