Desde mediados del siglo XIII, se venera en Alsemberg una imagen románica de la Virgen María, que supuestamente fue donada a la parroquia por Sofía, esposa del duque Enrique II de Brabante. La leyenda cuenta que la Sra. Virgen de la reina de Hungría, Isabel de Turingia, deseaba que se construyera una iglesia en Brabante, en la montaña donde florecía el aselmo. La imagen milagrosa románica-bizantina de la Madre Virgen, invocada como la "Estrella del Mar", data de aproximadamente 1200 y está tallada en haya húngara. La princesa Sofía, hija de la Sra. Isabel de Hungría, que murió en 1231, la llevó a Alsemberg cuando se casó con el duque Enrique en 1242.
