Doel estaba destinado a desaparecer bajo la expansión del puerto de Amberes, tan pronto como este fijó su mirada en Waasland. Ya en los años 60 se impuso la primera prohibición de construcción, tras lo cual comenzó una lucha legal que se prolongó durante décadas.
Desde 2022, la perspectiva ha dado un giro de 180 grados. En lo que se llamó un “acuerdo histórico”, trece partes, incluida el gobierno flamenco, el puerto y grupos de acción, firmaron un escenario en el que el puerto puede expandirse sin que el pueblo y los pólders tengan que ceder. Desde entonces, se está forjando un nuevo futuro aquí.
