Doel was doomed to disappear under the expansion of the port of Antwerp as soon as it had set its sights on the Waasland. As early as the 1960s, the first construction ban was imposed, followed by a legal battle that dragged on for decades.
Since 2022, the perspective has turned 180 degrees. In what has been called a "historic agreement," thirteen parties, including the Flemish government, the port, and activist groups, signed a scenario in which the port can expand without the village and the polders having to make way. Since then, a new future has been forged here.
