Doel was gedoemd om te verdwijnen onder de uitbreiding van de Antwerpse haven, zodra die haar oog op het Waasland had laten vallen. Al in de jaren 60 kwam er het eerste bouwverbod, waarna een juridische strijd begon die decennia aansleepte.
Sinds 2022 is het perspectief 180 graden gedraaid. In wat een “historisch akkoord” werd genoemd, tekenden dertien partijen, waaronder de Vlaamse regering, de haven en actiegroepen, een scenario waarin de haven kan uitbreiden zonder dat het dorp en de polders moeten wijken. Sindsdien wordt hier een nieuwe toekomst gesmeed.
