La mala situación económica de Gante en los siglos XVI y XVII cambió en el siglo XVIII debido a una acción criminal de Lieven Bauwens. Él contrabandeó la máquina de hilar británica, bajo el bloqueo napoleónico. Así, fue responsable indirecto de mucha prosperidad para los industriales, pero de mucha pobreza para los trabajadores. En su tiempo, era tan impopular en Gante que pasó gran parte de su tiempo en Francia. Ahora tiene una estatua.
