Este edificio Art Deco data de la década de 1930. Su apodo es "el tejido sonoro", por sus cualidades acústicas sin precedentes. Es uno de los primeros estudios de radiodifusión del mundo.
El arquitecto Joseph Diongre ganó en 1934 el concurso de arquitectura del NIR junto con Raymond Braillard.
En 1939, el edificio se utilizó por primera vez y pronto obtuvo fama en todo el mundo por la calidad de sus estudios.
En 1973, las Compañías Nacionales de Radio se mudaron a Schaarbeek. El edificio se deterioró rápidamente, aunque fue protegido en 1994 y en 1997, se incluyó en la lista de la UNESCO de los edificios más amenazados del mundo. Afortunadamente, fue salvado en 1998 por una organización privada y hoy es un importante centro cultural con festivales de música, conciertos, películas y debates.
