Questo edificio Art Deco risale agli anni '30. Il suo soprannome è "il tessuto del suono", per le sue qualità acustiche senza precedenti. È uno dei primi studi di broadcasting radiofonico al mondo.
L'architetto Joseph Diongre vinse nel 1934 il concorso di architettura del NIR insieme a Raymond Braillard.
Nel 1939 l'edificio fu utilizzato per la prima volta e ottenne rapidamente fama in tutto il mondo per la qualità dei suoi studi.
Nel 1973, le Compagnie Radio Nazionali si trasferirono a Schaarbeek. L'edificio deteriorò rapidamente, anche se fu protetto nel 1994 e nel 1997 fu inserito nella lista dell'UNESCO dei edifici più minacciati al mondo. Fortunatamente, fu salvato nel 1998 da un'organizzazione privata e oggi è un importante centro culturale con festival musicali, concerti, film e dibattiti.
