El Vrijbos, que quizás conoces por la banda de forajidos de Bakelandt, se convirtió durante la Primera Guerra Mundial en el punto estratégico por excelencia para los alemanes. El bosque estaba entrelazado con una red de ferrocarriles que se conectaban a la línea de tren Staden-Westrozebeke. Esto les permitía transportar fácilmente su material pesado y artillería. Poco a poco, el bosque se transformó en un arsenal de guerra del ejército alemán. En septiembre de 1918, se lanzó la ofensiva contra el ejército alemán. Del bosque de Houthulst solo quedaron troncos destrozados. Actualmente, el bosque es una hermosa zona de senderismo con más de 5 km de caminos para caminar.
