El Escalda recorre 17 kilómetros sobre suelo de Flandes Occidental. Es un río muy navegable porque conecta Francia con los puertos flamencos y además facilita el acceso a los Países Bajos. El Escalda es un eje de tráfico que no se debe subestimar. Está navegable día y noche. Las meandros cortados (coupures) caracterizan el valle del Escalda.
