L’Escaut s’étend sur 17 kilomètres sur le sol flamand occidental. C’est un fleuve très fréquenté car il relie la France aux ports flamands et rend également les Pays-Bas facilement accessibles. L’Escaut est un axe de circulation qu’il ne faut pas sous-estimer. Il est navigable jour et nuit. Les méandres de coupure (dénominations) caractérisent la vallée de l’Escaut.
