La fundación del ayuntamiento de Binche en la Gran Plaza está asociada al desarrollo económico de la ciudad – con su mercado de carne – y la llegada de las libertades municipales, de las cuales el campanario sigue siendo un poderoso símbolo.
Por esa razón, la torre fue incluida en la lista del patrimonio mundial de la Unesco. Los tres arcos de la planta baja y la base del campanario datan del siglo XIV.
El ayuntamiento fue modificado en el siglo XVI por Jacques Du Broeucq y (alrededor de 1770) adaptado por Laurent-Benoît Dewez en estilo neoclásico, recuperando así su aspecto original hacia finales del siglo XIX.
El campanario también alberga una campana y un carillón del siglo XVI.
