La costruzione del municipio di Binche nella Grande Piazza è collegata allo sviluppo economico della città – con il suo mercato della carne – e all'arrivo delle libertà comunali, di cui il belfort è ancora un potente simbolo.
Per questo motivo, la torre è stata iscritta nella lista del patrimonio mondiale dell'Unesco. I tre archi del piano terra e la base del belfort risalgono al 14°
secolo.
Il municipio è stato modificato nel 16° secolo da Jacques Du Broeucq e (intorno al 1770) adattato in stile neoclassico da Laurent-Benoît Dewez, per ritrovare così la sua originale allure verso la fine del 19° secolo.
Il belfort ospita anche una campana e un carillon del 16° secolo.
