En Umicore Olen se extrajo el radio del uranio de la mina congoleña Shinkolbwe. Fue esa mina la que también proporcionaría el uranio para las bombas atómicas que pondrían fin a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Las instalaciones aquí se construyeron en 1922. Cinco años después, Olen proporcionaba aproximadamente el 35% del volumen total de radio en el mercado mundial. En total, se trataba de 180 gramos. Umicore formaba parte de SGMH o la Société Général Métallurgique de Hoboken. Aquí también se procesaba cobre de las minas de Katanga.
