À Umicore Olen, le radium a été extrait de l'uranium de la mine congolaise de Shinkolbwe. C'est cette mine qui devait également fournir l'uranium pour les bombes atomiques qui mettraient fin à la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Les installations ici ont été construites en 1922. Cinq ans plus tard, Olen fournissait environ 35 % du volume total de radium sur le marché mondial. Au total, cela représentait 180 grammes. Umicore faisait partie de SGMH ou la Société Générale Métallurgique de Hoboken. Ici, on traitait également du cuivre provenant des mines de Katanga.
