Hasta 1266, Chênée pertenecía al bailía de Jupille, que a su vez estaba subordinada al obispado de Verdun. En ese año, Chênée pasó al Principado de Lieja. Durante la época francesa, se convirtió en un municipio independiente, que en 1977 se incorporó al municipio de Lieja.
Chênée contaba en 1758 con tres fábricas de vidrio: Grandchamps & Coune, Bonniver y Cambresier & Co. Finalmente, quedó la Verrerie Grandchamps, que fabricaba botellas para el agua mineral Spa. Esta fue la continuación de las Verreries d'Amblève, que se establecieron en 1721 en Aywaille.
