Sint-Maria-Latem era un municipio que, tras la reorganización administrativa de 1971, se fusionó con la nueva entidad de Zwalm. Se encuentra en la provincia de Flandes Oriental, en la región Flamenca de Bélgica. En 2001 tenía 629 habitantes. Una primera mención escrita de Laethem data del 820. En 1175-1176, el capítulo de Kamerijk otorgó el patronato a la Abadía de San Bavón de Gante. El pueblo de Sint-Maria-Latem formaba parte de la baronía de Gavere, que bajo el reino de Carlos V se convirtió en un principado en la castellanía del país de Aalst.
