En la llanura de Rijmenam, cerca de Bonheiden y Keerbergen, se libró una feroz batalla en 1578. Aquí luchó un ejército español contra el ejército de los Estados de los Países Bajos, como una de las muchas batallas de la Guerra de los Ochenta Años. Hasta 1000 soldados españoles habrían caído aquí en esta batalla, el 1 de agosto de 1578.
