Op de vlakte van Rijmenam, nabij Bonheiden en Keerbergen werd in 1578 een woest gevecht geleverd. Hier vechten een Spaans leger tegen het Staatse leger uit de Nederlanden, als één van de vele veldslagen uit de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Tot 1000 Spaanse soldaten zouden hier gesneuveld zijn bij deze slag, op 1 augustus 1578.
