Sur la plaine de Rijmenam, près de Bonheiden et Keerbergen, une bataille féroce a eu lieu en 1578. Ici, une armée espagnole a combattu contre l'armée des États des Pays-Bas, lors de l'une des nombreuses batailles de la guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans. Jusqu'à 1000 soldats espagnols auraient péri lors de cette bataille, le 1er août 1578.
