Hillegem es una aldea en la provincia belga de Flandes Oriental y un municipio de Herzele. La localidad cuenta con aproximadamente 3500 habitantes y está situada en la región de Dender, a orillas del Molenbeek.
El nombre de Hillegem se encuentra por primera vez en los anales de la abadía de San Pedro de Gante entre los años 811 y 870 como Hildenagahem, indicando que este lugar estaba situado en el pagus Bracbantensis, "Juxta fluviola Borsitbace" o Borsbeke. En 1108, 1145 y 1201 se escribió Hillengem; en 1164 y 1198 Hillengen; en 1186 Hillenghem; en 1205 Hillegem y en un documento de 1218 terra Hillini. A la luz de esta última escritura, no es difícil explicar el nombre de esta aldea: Hille, Hillen o Hillo es un antiguo nombre personal germánico, por lo que Hillegem simplemente significa el lugar de residencia de los Hillen.
