Hillegem è un villaggio nella provincia belga di Fiandre Orientali ed è una frazione di Herzele. Il luogo conta circa 3500 abitanti ed è situato nella regione del Dender, lungo il Molenbeek.
Il nome di Hillegem viene menzionato per la prima volta nei registri dell'abbazia di San Pietro a Gand tra gli anni 811 e 870 come Hildenagahem, con l'indicazione che questo luogo si trovava nel pagus Bracbantensis, "Juxta fluviola Borsitbace" o Borsbeke. Nel 1108, 1145 e 1201 si scriveva Hillengem; nel 1164 e 1198 Hillengen; nel 1186 Hillenghem; nel 1205 Hillegem e in un documento del 1218 terra Hillini. Considerando quest'ultima grafia, non è difficile spiegare il nome di questo villaggio: Hille, Hillen o Hillo è un nome personale antico germanico, quindi Hillegem significa semplicemente il luogo di residenza degli Hillen.
