Justo antes de que los Geuzen se apoderaran de Lede el 8 de mayo de 1581, ya habían tomado el castillo. La conquista fue, según el Geuzenboek de Boon, bastante fácil, ya que los soldados que defendían el castillo ofrecieron poca o ninguna resistencia ante las tropas geuzas que avanzaban. En ese momento, se había unido un gran número de tropas de combate de Gante a esas tropas geuzas.
