Kurz bevor sich die Geuzen am 8. Mai 1581 Lede bemächtigten, hatten sie bereits das Schloss eingenommen. Die Eroberung verlief laut Boons Geuzenbuch recht einfach, da die Soldaten, die das Schloss verteidigten, wenig oder keinen Widerstand gegen die vorrückenden Geuzentroppen leisteten. Zu diesen Geuzentroppen hatten sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt eine Vielzahl von Gentse Truppen angeschlossen.
