Juste avant que les Geuzen ne s'emparent de Lede le 8 mai 1581, ils avaient déjà pris le château. La conquête s'est déroulée, selon le Geuzenboek de Boon, assez facilement, car les soldats qui défendaient le château ne résistaient guère aux troupes des Geuzens qui progressaient. À ce moment-là, un grand nombre de troupes gantoises s'étaient jointes à ces troupes des Geuzens.
