Vlak voor de Geuzen zich op 8 mei 1581 meester maakten van Lede, hadden ze al het kasteel ingenomen. De verovering verliep volgens Boons Geuzenboek vrij makkelijk, omdat de soldaten die het kasteel verdedigden weinig of geen weerstand boden aan de oprukkende Geuzentroepen. Bij die Geuzentroepen hadden zich op dat moment een groot aantal Gentse krijgstroepen aangesloten.
