Uno de los crímenes que Boon describe en De Zwarte Hand tuvo lugar en 1886. Valeer Kiekers y Frans Van Geem querían entonces entrar a robar en casa del alcalde Mertens en Hofstade. Mientras Kiekers intentaba forzar la cerradura, Van Geem trepó la verja. Se resbaló y cayó sobre un punto de hierro de la verja. Debido a esto, los ladrones tuvieron que abandonar su intento. Este crimen realmente ocurrió, solo que Boon creó su propia versión de los hechos y ideó nombres ficticios para sus personajes principales.
