L'une des crimes que Boon décrit dans De Zwarte Hand a eu lieu en 1886. Valeer Kiekers et Frans Van Geem voulaient s'introduire chez le maire Mertens à Hofstade. Pendant que Kiekers essayait de dévisser le cadenas, Van Geem escaladait la clôture. Il a glissé et est tombé sur un bout de fer du grillage. Cela a contraint les voleurs à interrompre leur tentative. Ce crime a réellement eu lieu, mais Boon a créé sa propre version des faits et a inventé des pseudonymes pour ses personnages principaux.
