Sabemos que el científico Albert Einstein pasó por De Haan durante su fuga de Alemania en 1933. Einstein era mundialmente famoso en ese momento, ya que había recibido el Premio Nobel de física y había sacudido profundamente el mundo científico con sus artículos sobre la teoría de la relatividad. Como judío y convencido pacifista, huía del horror del creciente nazismo en Alemania. En De Haan, conoció al famoso pintor James Ensor. Allí conversaron en el restaurante Au Coeur Volant el 2 de agosto de 1933. El Coeur Volant fue demolido hace 15 años y reemplazado por una villa de apartamentos. Enfrente, hay una pequeña plaza donde se colocó hace algunos años una estatua de Einstein. El Coeur Volant era el único restaurante de 2 estrellas que tenía De Haan.
