Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, las tropas alemanas ocuparon el castillo y lo utilizaron como depósito de municiones. En septiembre de 1944, cuando los soldados alemanes se retiraron de Grimbergen, incendiaron el castillo para evitar que los aliados avanzando obtuvieran la munición. Como resultado, hubo incendios intensos y explosiones devastadoras. A pesar de ello, la antigua torre del homenaje, una torre redonda de esquina y algunas partes de las murallas permanecieron en pie.
