Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les troupes allemandes ont occupé le château et l'ont utilisé comme dépôt de munitions. En septembre 1944, lorsque les soldats allemands se retirèrent de Grimbergen, ils ont incendié le château pour éviter que les alliés approchants ne mettent la main sur les munitions. De violents incendies et des explosions dévastatrices en furent la conséquence. Néanmoins, l'ancienne tour maîtresse, une tour d'angle ronde et quelques parties de murs sont restées debout.
