El Steengelaag es una reserva natural reconocida de propiedad del municipio de Stekene. La gestión fue transferida en 1992 a Natuurpunt Waasland Noord.
En los años 1800 - 1900 se extrajo arcilla en esta parte de Stekene. Como resultado, se formaron dos estanques de arcilla. Tras la interrupción de la extracción de arcilla en 1977, la naturaleza ha tomado el control y ha surgido una vegetación rica y variada.
A lo largo del área aún se pueden ver rastros de la explotación, como la presencia del dragador de arcilla.
