Description

Het Steengelaag is een erkend natuurreservaat in eigendom van de gemeente Stekene. Het beheer werd in 1992 overgedragen aan Natuurpunt Waasland Noord.
In de jaren 1800 – 1900 werd in dit deel van Stekene klei gewonnen. Hierdoor zijn twee kleiputten ontstaan. Na het stopzetten van de kleiwinning in 1977 heeft de natuur hier de vrije hand gekregen en is er een rijke en gevarieerde vegetatie ontstaan.
Doorheen het gebied zijn nog altijd sporen te zien van de exploitatie, zoals de aanwezigheid van de kleibaggeraar.
