Il Steengelaag è una riserva naturale riconosciuta di proprietà del comune di Stekene. La gestione è stata trasferita nel 1992 a Natuurpunt Waasland Noord.
Negli anni 1800 - 1900 in questa parte di Stekene è stata estratta argilla. Da ciò sono nate due cave di argilla. Dopo l'interruzione dell'estrazione dell'argilla nel 1977, la natura ha avuto campo libero ed è nata una vegetazione ricca e variegata.
Attraverso l'area sono ancora visibili tracce dell'attività estrattiva, come la presenza del dragamine d'argilla.
