La réserve naturelle de Steengelaag est une réserve naturelle reconnue, appartenant à la commune de Stekene. La gestion a été transférée à Natuurpunt Waasland Noord en 1992.
Au cours des années 1800 à 1900, de l'argile a été extraite dans cette région de Stekene. Cela a donné naissance à deux mares d'argile. Après l'arrêt de l'extraction de l'argile en 1977, la nature a eu libre cours et une végétation riche et variée s'est développée.
Des traces de l'exploitation sont encore visibles dans la région, comme la présence de la dragueuse d'argile.
