El 'Fuerte Quemado' forma parte de la línea de defensa para proteger Brujas y Damme de ataques desde las Provincias Unidas. Las tropas francesas construyeron esta fortificación alrededor de 1703-1704, durante la Guerra de Sucesión Española. Es un clásico reduto cuadrado con un foso alrededor del terreno y presumiblemente en el centro una torre de vigilancia de madera. La fortaleza fue restaurada históricamente sin grandes cambios en el paisaje, una reconstrucción suave.
Junto al fuerte corría el 'Canal Nuevo'. Este fue construido a mediados del siglo XVI para conectar mejor Brujas con Sluis y la desembocadura del Zwin.
