Het Verbrand Fort' behoort tot de verdedigingslinie om Brugge en Damme te beschermen tegen aanvallen vanuit de Noordelijke Nederlanden. Franse troepen leggen deze versterking aan omstreeks 1703-1704, tijdens de Spaanse Successieoorlog. Het is een klassieke vierkante redoute met een gracht rond het terrein en vermoedelijk centraal een houten uitkijktoren. Het fort werd historisch hersteld zonder grote ingrepen op het landschap, een zachte reconstructie.
Naast het fort liep de 'Verse Vaart'. Die is midden de 16e eeuw aangelegd om Brugge beter te verbinden met Sluis en de Zwinmonding.
