El dominio militar de La Chartreuse fue primero un monasterio y luego una fortaleza militar que en 1692 fue rediseñada a fondo por Menno van Coenhoorn, el "Vauban" holandés. El dominio militar fue desclasificado como fortaleza en 1891, pero continuó siendo un cuartel hasta 1982. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, los edificios fueron utilizados para encerrar a prisioneros políticos.
