Il dominio militare di La Chartreuse era inizialmente un monastero e poi una fortezza militare che nel 1692 fu radicalmente ridisegnata da Menno van Coenhoorn, il 'Vauban' olandese. Il dominio militare fu declassato a fortezza nel 1891, ma rimase una caserma fino al 1982. Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, gli edifici furono utilizzati per detenere prigionieri politici. Numerosi membri della resistenza furono detenuti lì e 49 di loro furono fucilati, tra cui il luikese Dieudonné Lambrecht, che, insieme al giovane Walthère Dewé, fu alla base della rete di spionaggio inglese 'La Dame Blanche', che si estendeva da Bruxelles al nord della Francia.
