De un documento episcopal se deduce que ya había una iglesita en Sint-Martens-Latem antes de 1121. La forma románica original del edificio sugiere que la antigua iglesita ya estaba construida en piedra. Dado que la iglesia está situada en la orilla del Leie, la piedra caliza de Tournai podía ser fácilmente transportada a través del Escalda y el Leie. En 1771, la iglesia fue completamente renovada. En el cementerio están las tumbas del pintor Albijn Van den Abeele (1835-1918) y del escultor barón George Minne (1866-1941). A través de las vidrieras y las pinturas, también hay arte contemporáneo presente en la iglesia.
