An episcopal charter shows that there was already a church in Sint-Martens-Latem before 1121. The Romanesque archetype of the building suggests that the old church was already built in stone. Since the church is located on the banks of the Lys, the Tournai limestone could easily be supplied via the Scheldt and the Lys. In 1771 the church was thoroughly renovated. The graves of painter Albijn Van den Abeele (1835-1918) and sculptor Baron George Minne (1866-1941) are buried in the cemetery. Through the stained glass windows and the paintings, there is also contemporary art in the church.
